Living in the same city for years can make everything feel a bit routine, right? That’s why it’s so refreshing to dive into experiences that make you feel like a wide-eyed tourist again, seeing your home with fresh eyes. From exploring hidden parks and new attractions to finding unique weekend activities, it’s all about rediscovering your city.
For me, that rediscovery came in the form of my first-ever helicopter ride over Sydney’s iconic landmarks. Let me tell you, it’s now one of my favourite memories. Seeing Sydney from up high gave me a whole new appreciation for our bustling city, fringed with stunning coastlines and lush parks.

I booked a 20-minute flight with Blue Sky Helicopters with the Experience Oz team. Matt and his friendly team gave a thorough safety briefing, and by the end, I felt completely at ease and excited to get up in the air.
A few tips before you hop on your chopper: bring sunnies, sunscreen, and have a light meal beforehand. Those floor-to-ceiling windows give you epic views, but they also let in a lot of sun. If you’re prone to motion sickness, pop some anti-nausea tablets about 20-30 minutes before your flight.
During the 20-minute flight, we soared over Sydney’s highlights like Taronga Zoo (spotted some giraffes!), the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, the CBD, and the beautiful coastlines. Seeing Sydney from above is truly something else.
As we approached the Harbour Bridge, we flew so close that we could wave to the climbers. Turns out, it’s a regulation to fly below a certain height to avoid interfering with planes. So, if you think you can get the same view from a commercial flight, think again!
Tip: Time flies (pun intended), so while you’re busy snapping photos and videos, don’t forget to soak in the moment. If you start feeling queasy, fix your gaze on the horizon. And don’t worry about turbulence—it’s a smooth ride.
Our pilot was a fountain of knowledge, sharing fascinating tidbits about the sights, including where the Prime Minister and Royal Family stay when they’re in town, as well as other landmarks you might not recognise from the sky. And if you’re lucky, you’ll spot whales during the season from May to November.
So, consider this your sign to be a tourist in your own city. Whether it’s exploring new places or trying out new experiences, and maybe for your next special occasion, take to the skies in a helicopter!
