What you can expect

See the best of Kangaroo Island on this day tour with the help of a knowledgable guide. Start the tour with a cuppa and some homemade cakes before setting off for a walk through tall Eucalypts where koalas nap overhead - perhaps waking briefly for some food. Travel through some of the Island's best farming country and share stories with your friendly guide.

Your guide will answer all your questions about Kangaroo Island and explain how the isolation of this special part of South Australia impacts the ecology of the area. You'll discover wallabies almost extinct on the mainland, a species of kangaroo unique to the Island and a whole range of other animals and plants.

Break for lunch at a private location in the bush. Dine on BBQ King George Whiting and fresh salads, washing it all down with a few glasses of South Australian wine. The afternoon consists of walking along Seal Bay, among the groups of wild sea lions that call this breathtaking spot home. Note: solo travellers can join exisiting departures.

This experience is part of the Responsible range because they are ECO certified by Ecotourism Australia.

What you need to know

  • Enjoy an elegant seafood barbecue lunch with local wines at a private bush camp
  • Learn about the geography, history and contemporary Island lifestyle from your knowledgeable local guide
  • Discover kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and sea lions in the wild
Itinerary
  • Get a feel for Island Life – where things take time, drivers wave as they go by – or even stop for a chat.
  • Have a cuppa with some home-made treats before taking a walk down a country track through tall Eucalyptus trees where koalas snooze overhead or wake briefly for a feed. Listen for the sounds of the bush – brightly coloured honeyeaters and brilliant parrots, cicadas or perhaps just the sound of silence.
  • Travel through the Island’s most productive country to the north coast. Walk through the bush with your guide – through strangely shaped trees learning what makes that noise, whose tracks are those, and who left THAT little pile there? Look for small wallabies almost extinct on the mainland, a kangaroo found only on Kangaroo Island and a variety of other birds, plants and animals.
  • Break for lunch at a private bush camp and enjoy a delicious meal featuring King George whiting (local sea fish), fresh salads and fine South Australian wines.
  • At Seal Bay Conservation Park take a private tour with your guide among Australian sea-lions on a beautiful sandy beach – an experience similar to that of the Galapagos. Watch pups nursing or playing in the surf, see old bulls bearing the scars of territorial disputes and learn about their unique breeding biology.
